History & Progress Report on Alumni Directorate

In Nigeria Alumni Associations have a long history dating to as far back as 1821. The purpose of an Alumni Association is to foster a spirit of loyalty among members as well as promote the general welfare of the Alma Mater. Alumni Associations exist to support the parent organizational goal and to strengthen ties.

The Directorate of Alumni Development of Yobe State University was established on 5th August, 2015 with Dr. Fatsuma Dada Mohammed as the founding Officer. The Directorate being new, has many challenges but has managed to record the following success:

  1. We traced the whereabouts of the Ex-students and established contact with them.
  2. Formation of the basic structure of the Yobe State University Alumni Association.
  3. Setting a Committee that drafted the constitution of the Association from the student body.
  4. On 20th January 2016, the head of the Directorate wrote a memo to the University management and suggested for the introduction of a token Alumni fee of N400 during collection of results by ex-Students. It was approved, although the amount was not much, the effort formed the first financial foundation of the Association.
  5. Together with the bursary staff in the Alumni Directorate, the process of opening an Alumni account was carried out. The Association now has a bank account dedicated to it.
  6. Through personal efforts, the head formed a social network group named YSU ALUMNI ACTIVITIES on WhatsApp since 15th January 2016, where we create awareness and communicate with the ex-students. The forum is still in existence and effectively serving as a means of communication.
  7. Holding regular meetings with the Alumni which eventually resulted in the election of a 13 member Exco on 18th January 2018.
  8. During the Maiden convocation of the University, the Alumni Members played significant roles in the ceremony including awards to significant personalities of Yobe State.

Problems and Challenges

  1. The Yobe State University Alumni Directorate has no permanent Office.
  2. The YSU Alumni Association is still too young to support itself because majority of the Graduates, including majority of the Exco members are still unemployed. They need the support of the Parent body which is the University management to grow.

Conclusion

The National University Commission attaches importance to University Alumni activities because it is a statutory body that can positively portray the image of the University in many ways. Alumni are critical stake holders and their support is also critical to the conceptualization and developments in the University system. If well utilized, they represent a significant and vocal constituency.
